Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Riddhi Kharkia]

It is beyond doubt that the last decade has seen frequent reversals in positions in the tech sector with a few of the big names like Microsoft (MSFT), Cisco (CSCO) and IBM (IBM) facing rough times and going down as legacy leaders of the domain. In recent days, IBM shareholders were disappointed and concerned after the Chinese government issued a call to Chinese corporations, especially major banks, to replace American hardware with locally manufactured servers and other components due to spying allegations.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) climbed 1%. The company has done a good job of increasing its presence in the cloud-computing space, with Cisco having been cite! d by an a! nalyst firm as hurting the prospects of cloud rival VMware (NYSE: VMW  ) . As tech giants across the industry break out of their traditional niches and all chase after the same high-growth areas, such confrontations will become more commonplace, and it'll be essential for Cisco to use its size and financial strength to make the most of the opportunities it has.

  • [By Philip Mause]

I think that the current environment continues to favor companies with strong balance sheets that can take advantage of generous credit markets and, in this connection, I am still bullish on AAPL, MSFT, Cisco (CSCO), Seagate (STX), Western Digital (WDC) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). All things being equal, higher interest rates are bad for stocks. But the market has already priced in substantial increases in interest rates so that interest rate increases do not necessarily constitute sell signals.

This point out the finger towards the fast-food industry as they are using trans fats (responsible for clogging arteries) in their products to make it more mouth watering.

This Year's Batch of Super Bowl Ads? Meh.

#fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-859302{display:none}.cke_show_borders #fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-859302,#postcontentcontainer #fivemin-widget-blogsmith-image-859302{width:570px;height:411px;display:block} The Weird And Expensive World of Super Bowl Ads

NEW YORK -- Which Super Bowl ads will people discuss at the office a day after the biggest event of the year on American television? There were no crude jokes during the Super Bowl, the NFL championship and most-watched U.S. sporting event. Sexual innuendo was kept to a minimum. And uncomfortable scenes were missing. In short, there wasn't much shock value. Sure, RadioShack (RSH) poked fun at its image by starring '80s icons like Teen Wolf in its ad. And Coca-Cola (KO) struck an emotional chord by showcasing people of different diversities in its spot. As did Chrysler, with its "Made in America" message. But with a 30-second Super Bowl commercial fetching $4 million and more than 108 million viewers expected to tune in to Sunday night's game, advertisers tried to keep it family friendly with socially conscious statements, patriotic messages and light humor. After all, shocking ads in previous years haven't always been well received. (Think: GoDaddy.com's ad that featured a long, up-close kiss was at the bottom of the most popular ad lists last year.) "A lot of brands were going with the safety from the start," said David Berkowitz, chief marketing officer for digital ad agency MRY. Many advertisers played it safe by promoting a cause or focusing on sentimental issues. Chevrolet's (GM) ad showed a couple driving through the desert in remembrance of World Cancer Day. And Bank of America (BAC) turned its ad into a virtual video for singing group U2's new single "Invisible" to raise money for an AIDS charity. The song will be a free download on iTunes for 24 hours following the game and Bank of America will donate $1 each time it is downloaded to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. Meanwhile, a Microsoft (MSFT) ad focused on how its technology helps people in different ways. The ad is narrated by Steve Gleason, a former prof football player who is living with ALS, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. He uses a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet running eye gazer technology to speak. And an Anheuser-Busch (BUD) "Hero's Welcome" ad was an ode to U.S. soldiers. The spot showed how Anheuser-Busch helped prepare big celebration that included a parade with Clydesdales as a surprise for a soldier returning from Afghanistan. Many advertisers took the safe route by playing up their Americana roots. Coca-Cola's ad showed scenes of natural beauty and families of different diversities. The tune of "America the Beautiful" could be heard in different languages in the spot. Chrysler also went with a U.S.A. theme. It had a two-minute ad starring music legend Bob Dylan discussing the virtues of having cars built in Detroit, a theme the car maker has stuck with in previous ads with rapper Eminem and actor Clint Eastwood. "Let Germany brew your beer. Let Asia assemble your phone. We will build your car," Dylan said in the ad. Barbara Lippert, ad critic for Mediapost.com, said the ads were an attempt to connect with viewers on a more personal level. "We want to be able to feel through all these screens and through all the hype there's a human element and in the end were all human," Lippert said. Jokes were also tamer. "A few years ago we had a lot of physical slapstick, this year there's a lot less of that," said Berkowitz, with digital ad agency MRY. Even advertisers that typically go with more crude humor toned it down. GoDaddy.com's ad, for instance, showed it helping a small-business owner quit her job. "Women were fed up and parents were fed up and advertisers listened," said Mediapost.com's Lippert. Other advertisers went with light humor as well. There were mini sitcom reunions: in an ad for Dannon Oikos, the "Full House" cast reunited. And "Seinfeld" alums Jerry, George and even Newman came back to Tom's diner in New York City for an ad for Jerry Seinfield's show "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." Late-night political satirist Stephen Colbert appeared in a pair of 15-second ads for Wonderful Pistachios. In one he predicted the nuts would sell themselves because "I'm wonderful, they're wonderful." He was back a few seconds later covered in bright green branded messages because the nuts hadn't sold out in 30 seconds. Another light-humored ad came from RadioShack, which featured 1980s pop culture figures including Teen Wolf, Chucky, Alf and Hulk Hogan, destroying a store and a voiceover that said: "The 80s called, they want their store back. It's time for a new RadioShack."

Stock winners and losers of 2013 offer lessons

Investors are gleeful about how stocks are steamrolling to a big year, but many may not realize how many big blue-chips have missed the train.

All told, 48 stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500, including big names IBM, Intuitive Surgical, J.C. Penney, Caterpillar and Abercrombie & Fitch, are down this year. It's been a painful experience for investors holding shares of these laggards as the rest of the market has exploded to new highs. The S&P 500 is up 30% this year.

"Where you find earnings disappointments, or overvaluation, you find things haven't performed as well," says Robert Maltbie of Millennium Asset Management. It's even more painful to be left out, given that this market rally has included a broader swath of stocks than ever before. With 452 stocks higher this year, the market's participation is at its best level since the record in 2003, when 458 were up for the year, says Howard Silverblatt of S&P Dow Jones Indices.

INVESTMENT ROUNDTABLE: Top investment pros make predictions

TOP STOCK PICKS: Strategists give their top choices for 2014

That's not to mask the stellar performance of the winners. Investors turned extremely positive on stocks that were ridiculed or practically left for dead. Netflix was the year's biggest winner, up 280%, as investors appreciated the company's growth and it recovered from a public relations nightmare over pricing changes. Best Buy, supposed to be done in by online retailers, soared 230% as the company started renting space in stores to tech giants Apple, Microsoft and Samsung. Micron Technology, a maker of memory chips, soared 220% as demand for chips for tablets and smartphones took off.

Yet, a closer examination of the left-out stocks reveals interesting clues about the market's direction.

• Several of 2012's "it stocks" are no longer "it." IBM and Intuitive Surgical, maker of robots that help perform surgery, were must-owns in 2012 with many investors, with the stocks up 4.2% and 5.9% respectively. ! But this year, earnings disappointments at IBM and regulatory concerns at Intuitive have pushed the stocks down 8.4% and 25%. Homebuilders, too, had a big run last year. But in 2013, even though the home market is stable, shares of builders Lennar and AvalonBay are down 11.1% and 11.2%.

• Commodity plays. Miners of raw materials are having a tough year, as consumers in emerging nations such as China curb demand. That's been a hit to gold and copper miners Newmont Mining and Cliffs Natural Resources. Also hurt are makers of heavy equipment, such as Caterpillar and Deere, as demand falters, Maltbie says.

• Trampled retailers. J.C. Penney and Abercrombie & Fitch have been struggling to get their mojo in a fickle retail market. Penney is still recovering from a series of missteps under the guidance of former Apple retail head Ron Johnson, which alienated customers. Abercrombie & Fitch's results are suffering due to weak store traffic as its women's apparel designs missed the mark with consumers, according to a report by S&P Capital IQ's Jason Asaeda.

• Tech laggards. Data-storage providers Teradata and EMC both missed the rally, as did networking-equipment maker Broadcom and open-source software firm Red Hat. Disappointing earnings reports are not what tech investors are seeking. Slowing growth at Apple has lead to the stock rising just 6% this year, after being a darling in 2012.

Stock pickers who chose one of these laggards suffered mightily as the rest of the market took off, says Jack Ablin of Harris Private Bank. "It's tough to own individual stocks," he says. "That's where diversification pays off."

Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay ! back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. Breaking down the price of having someone else handle her various duties: Cooking and cleaning, $12,230 Child care, $21,736 Homework help, $7,290 Chauffeur, $5,672 Shopping, yard work, party and activity planning, finances, etc., $15,019 And my personal favorite, finding out what the kids are up to (paid in the equivalent value of a private detective), $1,036. Salary.com placed a higher value on moms in its 2014 Mother's Day salary survey, concluding that stay-at-home moms were worth $118,905 and working moms worth $70,107 (this does not include any paid salary from their job), with both groups putting more than 56 hours of overtime at home. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. Thanks to the Department of Agriculture, you can see what it costs to raise a child in the U.S. to 18. As of August 2013, the average cost is $241,080. This does not cover college, and hopefully dear old dad is contributing. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. By becoming moms, women give up time to do other things, what economists call an "opportunity cost." Particularly if your mother st

(HK:1109) (CRBJF) ! rose 1.7%. However, several retailers were weak, as Want Want China Holdings Ltd. (HK:0151) (WWNTF) , the country's top food and beverage maker, declined 2%. Hong Kong-based cosmetics brand Sa Sa International Holdings (HK:0178) (SAXJF) fell 1.6%, with a decline in Chinese June non-manufacturing data helping weigh on some retailers. Over on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index (CN:SHCOMP) retreated 0.4%, pulling back from its highest close in two weeks.

How the Navy Might Spin Seawater Into Jet Fuel

US IranAP/U.S. NavyThe USS John C. Stennis Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink -- but maybe a drop of alternative fuel? The U.S. Navy is hoping next-generation technology will let it replace petroleum fuels with something much more accessible and abundant: seawater. "If they made fuel at sea," Naval Research Laboratory chemist Heather Willauer told NextGov this week, "they wouldn't be buying it." Hydrocarbon fuel is, as the name suggests, made up of hydrogens and carbons. The first step to powering ships and planes with seawater is extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) from seawater. There's actually a lot of CO2 dissolved in the ocean –- at a concentration 140 times greater than in the air, in fact. NRL's way of capturing carbon involves a three-chambered cell that applies electricity to seawater. This cell pulls out carbon dioxide and also produces hydrogen. Next, the team uses a two-step process to combine the CO2 and hydrogen gases into a liquid soup of hydrocarbons. An iron-based catalyst converts both carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas into a type of hydrocarbon called an olefin (without the catalyst, you end up with a lot of wasteful methane production). For the second step, Navy chemists convert olefins to a jet fuel precursor through a process known as oligomerization –- combining little links of molecules called monomers into a longer, more complex chain called a polymer. Challenges remain, of course. The initial part of the process does gobble up a lot of energy, and while the technique has become more efficient in recent years, NRL's carbon capture methods could still be more efficient, Willauer told NextGov. In the fiscal year of 2011 alone, Navy vessels at sea used nearly 600 million gallons of fuel, according to the NRL. The Navy has set a goal of reducing its petroleum use by half by 2015. In a 2012 analysis published in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Willauer and her colleagues estimated that jet fuel could be made at sea for anywhere from $3 to $6 per gallon. While that's slightly more expensive than what the Navy has been paying for fuel, it may not be for long. "In nine years, the price of fuel for the Navy could be well over the price of producing a synthetic jet fuel at sea which would not incur the costs associated with logistical storage and delivery," Willauer and colleagues wrote. If the technology pans out, every Navy ship might be able to make its own fuel. Ships wouldn't have to be refueled by oil tankers -- a rough proposition in stormy weather or in battle. "A ship's ability to produce any significant fraction of the battle group's fuel for operations would increase the Navy's operational flexibility and time on station by increasing the mean time between refueling," the NRL team wrote. Pulling carbon dioxide out of the ocean to make jet fuel could also have an additional environmental boon, science writer David Biello noted at Yale Environment 360: reducing the trend of ocean acidification, which is caused by increased levels of CO2 in the ocean and has a range of effects on marine life, including making it harder for shellfish and coral to build their shells. Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Buy Right Now: Seadrill Limited(SDRL)

Seadrill Limited, an offshore drilling contractor, provides offshore drilling services to the oil and gas industries worldwide. It also offers platform drilling, well intervention, and engineering services. As of March 31, 2011 the company owned and operated 54 offshore drilling units, which consist of drillships, jack-up rigs, semisubmersible rigs, and tender rigs for operations in shallow and deepwater areas, as well as in benign and harsh environments. Seadrill Limited was founded in 1972 and is based in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jake Mann]

Offshore oil drillers have been blindsided by the fall in oil prices. I'll be watching these names closely in 2015, specifically Seadrill Ltd (NYSE: SDRL). Even if oil continues to fall, Seadrill offers an incredible dividend yield at 19.3 percent - cushioning the downside. If oil rallies, this oversold name should get a major boost.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    Taking action
Each company responded to the worsening industry in different ways. Seadrill Ltd (NYSE: SDRL  ) , for example, initially thought it could make it through the storm without making any major changes. The company's first action was to announce the delaying of the deliveries of a couple of its newbuild drillships by up to six months. The company said these delays were coming from the shipyards falling behind schedule. While that might be the case, we've seen other offshore drillers like Atwood Oceanics, (NYSE: ATW  ) pay extra fees in order to delay newbuild deliveries by six months hoping that the extra time would make it easier to find contracts for these rigs.

4 Stocks Under $10 Spiking Higher

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

>>5 Hated Earnings Stocks You Should Love

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

>>5 Stocks Poised for Breakouts

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside today.

5 Best Long Term Stocks To Invest In Right Now: VIVUS Inc (VVUS)

VIVUS, Inc., incorporated on May 16, 1996, is a biopharmaceutical company. It commercializes and develops therapies to address unmet needs in obesity, sleep apnea, diabetes and sexual health. The Company's drug, Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release) was approved by the the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of obesity as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adult patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obese), or 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus or high cholesterol (dyslipidemia). Qsymia incorporates low doses of active ingredients from two previously approved drugs, phentermine and topiramate. It has completed Phase 2 clinical studies for Qsymia for the treatment of sleeps apnea and Qsymia for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its drug al so includes STENDRA, or avanafil.

Qsymia for the treatment of obesity was approved as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adult patients with an initial BMI of 30 or greater (obese), or 27 or greater (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus or high cholesterol (dyslipidemia). Qsymia incorporates low doses of active ingredients from two previously approved drugs, phentermine and topiramate.

The Company initially launched Qsymia for distribution to eligible patients through the home delivery networks of two certified pharmacies, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens. Since then, it has expanded the distribution of Qsymia to include the home delivery networks of Express Scripts, Wal-Mart Pharmacy and, for its members only, Kaiser Permanente. Clinical studies of topiramate, a component of Qsymia, in type ! 2 diabetics resul ted in a clinically reduction of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). The! Company's drug, STENDRA (avanafil), is an oral PDE5 inhibitor the Company has licensed from Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation (MTPC).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Spencer Osborne]

Vivus (VVUS) announced Monday that the anti-obesity drug Qsymia is now available at about 8,000 retail pharmacies including, Walgreens, Costco, and Duane Reade pharmacies nationwide. The company had indicated previously that the retail roll-out would take until mid July. Vivus also indicated that it will continue to grow the retail presence over the coming months.

  • [By Brian Orelli]

    Obesity catfight
VIVUS (NASDAQ: VVUS  ) will launch fights on two fronts this summer.

The biotech company's obesity drug Qsymia now has direct competition from Arena Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ARNA  ) and Eisai's recently launched Belviq. I continue to think there's plenty of room for both drugs on the market; obesity is an epidemic after all. But in the short term, it's going to be interesting to see if the launch of Belviq cuts into Qsymia sales.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap biotech Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ARNA) soared yesterday and last Friday on earnings as well as news that the company will expand its marketing and supply agreement with Japan based Eisai for its BELVIQ (lorcaserin HCl) obesity drug, meaning it might be time to take a closer look at other biotech stocks like Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: OREX), EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ: ETRM) and VIVUS, Inc (NASDAQ: VVUS) that are in the business of treating obesity. Specifically, Arena Pharmaceuticals announced an expanded agreement providing Eisai with exclusive commercialization rights for all countries worldwide (except for South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Israel and New Zealand) for BELVIQ where Arena will receive an upfront payment of $60 million and is eligible to receive up to a to! tal of $1! 76.5 million in regulatory and development milestone payments - an increase of $123 million from the amount remaining available under the previous agreement. BELVIQ was a pproved in June 2012, but didn't reach the market until June 2013 due to logistical concerns like classification by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Its alsoapproved for use in adults who are obese or who are overweight and who have at least one serious medical condition (e.g. diabetes or high cholesterol).

  • [By Brian Orelli]

VIVUS' (NASDAQ: VVUS  ) Qsymia, for instance, was originally called Qnexa. The biotech company took awhile to get its sales people in place after approval, so it probably didn't have a bunch of manufacturing and sales materials with Qnexa on them printed before the approval. But all the branding opportunities as the drug worked its way through the drug development process were wasted. A Google search for Qnexa on Google results in about 610,000 hits!

Best Cheapest Companies To Own For 2015

With a price-to-book ratio of 1, this stock featured buy in our model portfolios among the cheapest large banks in the world, suggests Briton Ryle of The Wealth Advisory.

Banco Santander (SAN) isn't just a European bank. In its most recent quarterly earnings report, Spain accounted for just 15% of profits. And the bank has only 20% of its assets in Spain.

The bank has extensive operations across the lucrative areas of Latin America, and emerging markets account for half of profits in the latest quarter.

By country, Brazil accounted for 26% of total profit, with Mexico providing 13% and Chile 5%. The US and UK each account for 12% of profits.

Santander made a couple acquisitions lately. It paid nearly $190 million to buy the majority stake of the consumer finance unit of the large department store and retailer, El Corte Ingles.

And most recently, it acquired a stake in the Bank of Shanghai that's worth $468 million. Seems to us, the bank can't be so bad off if it is making investments.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK) has gained 56% this year; Las Vegas Sands (LVS) has climbed 38%. And Deutsche Bank has nice things to say about both today.

    Bloomberg

First Pinnacle. Deutsche Bank’s Carlo Santarelli ponders the stock’s big move and comes away still seeing value in its shares. He writes:

When we upgraded PNK in April, our thesis centered on the FCF strength of the combined entities [Pinnacle completed its acquisition of Ameristar Casinos on Aug. 14], a handful of favorable catalysts, easing regional gaming comps, & an inexpensive relative valuation. Given the shares’ sizeable move since then, we believe it is worth revisiting the investment case. Post the announcement of several asset sales and the closing of the transaction, we are adjusting our estimates, raising our PT to $30 from $24, and maintaining our bullish view at current levels given what we still believe to be an attractive free cash flow valuation, meaningful potential synergy realization beyond the $40 mm of announced benefits, and a free option on a lagging regional recovery.

Santarelli also revisited Las Vegas Sands and there too, he likes what he sees. He writes:

With…LVS at [a share price level] that have been challenging to break from over the last year plus, we believe this time is different and hence we see continued upward momentum…In the case of LVS, we see; 1) meaningful mass market strength continuing through year end, setting the stage for upward company and market estimate revisions for 2014, 2) continued cash flow appreciation and capital returns serving as downside protection and positive catalysts, and 3) continued shared gains, largely driven by table optimization and mass market strength, driving both estimates and sentiment.

He also likes Wynn Resorts (WYNN), despite its 34% gain.Santarelli writes:

As for WYNN, we believe near-term estimates continue to take a back seat to capital return

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Reuters]

Richard Drew/AP WASHINGTON -- The total value of the claims that market makers can recover after suffering losses due to Nasdaq OMX Group's (NDAQ) botched handling of Facebook Inc.'s (FB) initial public offering is $41.6 million, the exchange operator said Friday. The claims figure, which was calculated by Wall Street's industry-funded watchdog the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority -- better known as Finra -- falls short of the $62 million that Nasdaq had initially set aside to repay brokerages that lost money. Nasdaq said the figure is lower in part because some claims didn't qualify for compensation under its plan. The main reason for the lower figure, however, was because one firm opted to try to recover funds through arbitration. The announcement didn't name the brokerage, which was UBS (UBS). UBS has pegged its losses from the glitch-ridden IPO at $350 million and was vocal in its decision to file an arbitration demand which claimed Nasdaq had violated a contract agreement. Top 10 Integrated Utility Companies To Buy For 2015

Top 10 Integrated Utility Companies To Buy For 2015: iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM)

iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (the Fund) seeks to provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index (the Index). The Index is designed to measure equity market performance in the global emerging markets. The Index was developed by Morgan Stanley Capital International Inc. as an equity benchmark for emerging market stock performance. The Index is a capitalization-weighted index that aims to capture 85% of the (publicly available) total market capitalization. Component companies are adjusted for available float and must meet objective criteria for inclusion in the Index. The Index is reviewed quarterly.

The Fund invests in a representative sample of securities included in the Index that collectively has an investment profile similar to the Index. The Fund's investment advisor is Barclays Global Fund Advisors.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Traditionally, growth-oriented investors have looked to emerging markets for fast-paced opportunities that more established, mature markets lack, and in the early and mid-2000s, emerging-market investments like the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) delivered extremely strong returns to early investors in the space. In 2013, though, emerging markets performed horribly, faring far worse than U.S. stocks and markets in other developed-economy countries. Even after a good rebound in 2014, investors aren't sure what the future holds for emerging markets generally and the iShares ETF in particular.

  • [By MBM Research]

Stock markets have shown a late-summer pullback off of their long-term (and even record) highs, as bullish investors sell late and capture some of their profits. Adding to the ! downside pressure is the market uncertainty that is created by geopolitical concerns in areas like the Ukraine, Gaza, and Iraq. These tensions affect all areas of the world, so it is not surprising to see declines in developed markets -- ie. the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) and the iShares S&P Europe 350 Index (IEV) -- but also in emerging markets as well. This means the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Asia ETF (EEM) has also been unable to escape the selling pressure. Here, we look at the latest technical developments in the broad regional stock measures: SPY, IEV, EEM.

  • [By Victor Reklaitis]

The closely watched iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM)   finished Wednesday at $44.76, its best close since January 2013.

Hot Construction Companies To Buy Right Now

Clients frequently ask what we expect the S&P 500 Index (&P 500 to return in a given year. Our answer is nothing if not consistent: we do not know (and are wary of those who claim they do). However, we have been building an analysis set for some time now that indicates that institutional biases increasingly emphasize liquidity needs for their enormous pools of capital over investment merit, all in the name of reducing volatility.

At the index level, this trend is reflected in the prevalence of the floatdjusted market capitalization weighted index construction methodology, the results of which include increasingly topeavy indexes and the exclusion or underepresentation of smaller or more closelyeld companies, even of entire industry sectors. Unfortunately for index investors, the same large companies that dominate index returns also face the greatest challenge with respect to future growth. How can a company with a $100 billion sales base generate enough incremental sales each year to move the needle when it has already saturated its market? Complicating matters further, since investors wish to experience low volatility, the company with a $100 billion sales base is expected not only to increase its revenues and earnings materially, but to do so in a manner that does not result in a variable earnings stream or stock price.
