This past week marked my six-month anniversary of focusing on a space that I didn't even realize existed until I read a sensational article about one of the leading companies in the sector that marked the popping of a bubble that I then described in "Reefer Madness: Pot Stocks In A Bubble". Since then, I have published several articles on the sector as I have come up the learning curve. You can access the complete chronologically-ordered series here.
After intensive study, it's clear to me that the move towards legalized recreational and medical marijuana is likely to be a persistent and powerful investment theme over the next several years, and I am launching a series of articles intended to help investors navigate the space of the publicly-traded stocks. My goal is to help investors uncover opportunities but also, perhaps more importantly, to identify risks. I hope to balance my own perspective as a non-using financial analyst with input from experts. I have had many conversations with dispensary owners and others involved in the field and, in fact, am currently working on an interview that I intend to publish in the next week.

Rio Tinto Group climbed 2.9 percent after saying it will cost $3 billion less than projected to increase iron ore output capacity. Boliden AB (BOL) added 3.1 percent as Morgan Stanley raised its rating on the stock. Thomas Cook Group Plc (TCG) rose 13 percent after the travel operator posted a 49 percent increase in full-year earnings. British tobacco companies slipped following a report that after a U.K. minister announced the review of cigarette packaging.

Activist investor Mick McGuire reported last week that his firm, Marcato Capital, acquired 7.2% of Life Time Fitness (LTM), the Minneapolis-based operator of 110 super-sized fitness centers nationwide. Although LTM stock is up 13% year-to-date through May 28, McGuire believes its stock price can do a lot more.

Yet along with rival Sturm, Ruger (NYSE: RGR ) , Smith & Wesson is in danger of seeing earnings top out, and many investors wonder whether the good times for the gun industry will last or whether the recent move from Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK ) to spin off its firearms and sporting segment marks a high-water mark for Smith & Wesson and other gun manufacturers.

Oppenheimer & Co. analyst�Ittai Kidron became the latest to get cold feet, lowering his price target from $480 to $460 and reducing his iPhone 5 shipment projections for the current quarter. Apple wasn't the only former tech darling to get talked down this week. Maxim Group's Echo He lowered his price target on Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU ) to $75. The concern here is that margins will continue to come under pressure as competition intensifies.�

Sometimes the best short-sale opportunities are small, under-the-radar companies. One that I feel fits the bill perfectly is fiberglass boat maker Marine Products (NYSE: MPX ) .
