Kinder is making a bold move. But is it the right move? Sell-side analysts certainly approve of the news released Sunday that Houston billionaire Richard Kinder, who owns 24% stake in Kinder Morgan (KMI) is consolidating his vast pipeline empire into one company, and by doing so abandoning the master limited partnership financial structure he helped popularize years ago.
The specific details are all in today�� WSJ story. But basically, Kinder Morgan, the parent company, will acquire Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP), Kinder Morgan Management (KMR) and El Paso Pipeline Partners (EPB) in a series of transactions valued at $71 billion, including debt.
Granted, this flies in the face of the current trend, which is to spin off pipelines and oil terminals into tax-advantage partnerships that throw big chunks of cash to shareholders.
But investors worry that Kinder Morgan�� flagship MLP, Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, has grown too big to grow revenue or sweeten its distribution payments to shareholders.
