Top 5 Services Stocks For 2014

Women aren’t taking enough risk with their investments or their careers, say two prominent women in financial services.

Sallie Krawcheck, the former head of Merrill Lynch and Smith Barney who now heads the global women’s professional network 85 Broads, included women’s resistance to investment risk in her list posted Tuesday of the top 10 financial mistakes women make.

Krawcheck listed women’s aversion to investing risk at No. 7, noting that while it may sound “counterintuitive” for women to gamble since they tend to live longer than men and retire with less in savings, women still “need to push themselves” to take “somewhat greater (but still prudent)”risks to get a higher return.

But Eleanor Blaney, consumer advocate for the CFP Board, told ThinkAdvisor that women’s risk aversion is actually “the most common, as well as the most detrimental” financial mistake that she’s seen women make.

    Notice any airlines left out?
It's interesting, though, that the article made no mention of airlines like Spirit (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) or Allegiant. Both airlines are classified as "ultra-low-cost" carriers.

However, Republic's decision to sell or spin off its Frontier Airlines subsidiary was an even bigger positive catalyst. The company is working hard on transforming Frontier into an ultra-low cost carrier, similar to Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) , but that project will take years to fully pay off. Moreover, there are few synergies between Frontier and the core regional airline business. As a result, spinning off Frontier -- or selling it to a third party -- could create plenty of value for shareholders.

“… taken off over the past year as the industry’s ‘rationalization’ has meant higher fares, reduced capacity, and fewer amenities for passengers. Some measure of competition still comes from discounters such as Southwest (LUV), JetBlue (JBLU), and Spirit (SAVE). What’s left of antitrust enforcement ought to prevent these cut-rate carriers being scooped up by the big three of the skies, although Jack Hough noted … that Alaska Air (ALK) could draw takeover interest over the long haul (“Merger Mania May Soon Be on the Way,” Nov. 21) (subscription required).
